Foundation A

In Foundation A, the children have been learning to count beyond ten as well as read write teen numbers. The children have put numerals in order, counted groups of numbers and identified numbers that come before or after a given number. Using words such as ‘more’, ‘less’, ‘greater’ and ‘fewer’ is also a part of learning about numbers.

The children have begun to understand that a teen number includes one group of ten. For example number 16 is made of one group of ten and six more. Some children have also begun to recognise that this can be applied to other numbers. For example 26 is made of two groups of ten and six more.

At home encourage your child to recognise numbers in their environment, on letter boxes and price tags for example. Encourage your child to tell you the numbers that they recognise. Ask them if they know what one more and one less than that number would be. Can they think of a number that is greater or less than the number they have found. Do lots and lots of counting. If you child can count objects by ones, asks them if they can think of another ways to count the objects, by twos for example.

Happy counting!
